As I was sorting green tomatoes for the ones that will ripen more quickly--I thought of all of you in case you do not know that you can save your tomatoes just before the first frost. Through the years, I have found that first sorting--them for the ones that will ripen first, and then wrapping all of them in newspaper, placing the ones that will ripen first on top in a cardboard box. One of the best is a wine box or this year I am using a Corona beer box. The cardboard inserts to keep the bottles from breaking make a nice column for the tomatoes.
Lacking one of these, use any cardboard box that is not too deep. Once all of your tomatoes are wrapped, just place the box out of the way in the garage or basement. Last year we enjoyed our home grown tomatoes through December. We are forecast to have our first frost tonight. If you are in the same weather pattern--you might want to pick your tomatoes.
The rest of this afternoon I am picking off the basil leaves from my plants and making Pesto which freezes very well. I like to freeze it in small jars or freezer bags for us thoughout the winter.
Enjoy--I have to get back to work!!
