“Summer on the White Grass” by Lou Christen, my Fiancee is an inspiring book--both entertaining and encouraging , if not challenging the reader to really think about the influences facing Americans. I highly recommend you get a copy.
The book is witty and well written detailing what life was really like on a working Dude Ranch in the early 1950’s. Lou describes in clear detail how he happened to thumb his way west to Jackson Hole, Wyoming , a place he had only heard of and been told of its natural beauty and possible opportunity. Wanting to be a cowboy was such an overwhelming desire, he made the decision to head west with $40.00 In his pocket and 2 Snicker candy bars.
He lucked out most every step of the way—taking whatever odd jobs that were available, including washing dishes for a small hotel restaurant to assisting a pie baker at a Yellowstone resort hotel until he got his lucky break.
He was hired to be a ranch hand at the famous White Grass Dude Ranch in Jackson Hole where he did all manner of work to keep the horses fed and groomed, the wood available for the various cabin fireplaces to guiding trips into the tall Tetons and much more. He loved it and clearly writes the details of a working dude ranch and did such a good job he was offered the overall Manager for the ranch for the winter—however he regained his sense of responsibility a few weeks into the fall, for a higher education and headed back to St. Louis and University studies.
The book describes all manner of experiences and influences that shaped and guided him through his life and defines his loyalty to the fond memories of the White Grass and the manner in which the ranch has evolved.
The book is definitely worth a read and is guaranteed to challenge the reader to a call to action!
